Brain implant lets man with complete paralysis spell out thoughts

Mar 31, 2022

A 36-year-old man who is completely paralysed by late-stage MND was able to communicate with his family thanks to a brain implant, according to a paper published in Nature Communications. He was able to spell out numerous sentences, including, “I love my cool son”.

So What?

There’s A LOT to unpack here. From the potentially transformative impact for millions of partially or entirely paralysed individuals to be able to communicate, express their desires and control their care plans. To the ethical consent questions such potential raises, when it’s limited to short sentences or at risk of misinterpretation?

And fast forward to the potential for all of us to trigger, interact or experience digital events only using our minds. A world where “if you think it, it will happen”. In the meantime, we’re watching what happens next in this space.
