5 Lessons from the 5G Reunion

Aug 04, 2021

Snapshot of some of the headlines from the 5G Reunion session on 3rd August:

  1. 5G is essentially a bigger motorway with more lanes that let you drive faster, and, like the M4 upgrades, it's going to take a while to roll out everything (think 10 years). 5G today relies on the 4G network capacity and technology, but as new technology is rolled out it will unlock more capacity, more speed and lower latency.
  2. It's all about latency - delivering data and experiences in real time at high resolution. Low latency will power the growth of IoT devices and deliver immersive XR experiences in the future. It will enable us have to interactions that feel and look real, through a digital lens.
  3. Big tech are adopting 5G to deliver amazing customer service and experiences. Facebook. Google and Amazon are all investing in developing consumer use cases for 5G. From augmented reality city tours and VR retail stores, to interactive marketing, 5G music events and mass participation gaming. Being able to see the immediate use cases for fundraising can feel hard, but approach the opportunity from a lens of supporter engagement and see where it could lead.
  4. Think USE CASES! Charities have a key role in ensuring that 5G and associated technologies solve real problems for real people, rather than just pushing shiny solutions that don't solve real issues. 5G will enable us to solve problems that have previously been too hard or near impossible due to data, speed or connection. Take a moment to go back over ideas or problems you've discounted in the past and see where they could be approached or tackled in a different way.
  5. Collaboration. Collaboration. Collaboration. We can't do this on our own. From engaging internal teams and leaders, to reaching out to tech partners and other charities, we need to bring others on the journey with us and inspire them with the opportunity. How can you create and cultivate an ecosystem of collaborators to explore the potential of 5G? The Good Futures team are going to create some short videos to bring the safari themes to life to help you start the internal engagement process. We're keen to hear from you about other ways we could help kick start collaborations.
